There are some needs common to all humans: the need for community, the need for connection, the need for belonging. But with Duchenne, having those needs fulfilled can be quite challenging for many, if not all, individuals.
In fact, for many individuals with Duchenne, the social aspects of the disease are the part they struggle with the most. And it’s more than just the physical challenges. From a young age, there is a high prevalence of anxiety, depression, exclusion and isolation in our community.
Unfortunately, society itself tends to be unwelcoming to those living with Duchenne. As we wait for society to change, it’s up to the individual, their families, and their friends to do everything they can to ensure their social inclusion.
Attached is a list of articles that explain social roadblocks for individuals with Duchenne, and ways to navigate them. Whether you’re extended family and friends, or you’re a Duchenne family looking for new and creative tips, these links is for you.
