The mental health of any individual with Duchenne is multilayered and multifaceted. Between the lack of dystrophin in the brain, the social consequences of living with Duchenne, medical traumas and more, mental health concerns are bound to crop up. And yet, many adults are simply unaware that they even need help.

Many adults with Duchenne have significant mental health challenges rooted in at least two difference sources: the physiology of the brain and the experience of living with Duchenne.

For those who do face mental challenges, accessing help sometimes seem insurmountable for the adult with Duchenne. The stigma, the shame, the guilt, and the challenges often seem unsurmountable.

Is mental health help achievable? Definitely. And it requires advocacy and persistence.
